FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
DELRAY BEACH, FLORIDA (February 11, 2002) -- A local Boy Scout troop will be recognized by the Delray Beach City Commission for a community service project that will benefit the Citys Sister City in Moshi, Tanzania, East Africa.
Boy Scout Troop 340, Gulf Stream Council, Osceola District, rebuilt a broken computer from donated parts and they are giving it to the Moshi City Library. The computer was presented to the Delray Beach Sister Cities Committee as part of a Sister Cities on-going project of assisting the library with books, bookshelves and computers. For their effort, the Boy Scouts will earn their Computer and Citizenship of the World merit badges. Three area women who are traveling to Tanzania this month to climb Mt. Kilamanjaro will deliver the computer to City officials in Moshi.
"We are so excited that these women will be able hand deliver the computer on behalf of the Delray Beach Sister Cities Committee and the Boy Scouts," says Charlotte Durante, President of Delray Beach Sister Cities. "This is a wonderful way to get the community involved with our Sister City and it broadens the base of friendship."
The Boy Scout troop invited Mrs. Durante to speak to them about Sister Cities. The Troop is now interested in learning more about Moshi by getting involved with other Sister City activities such as the Student Exchange Program.
The computer that is going to Tanzania is the second system the Troop has gotten up and running. The first computer was given to a local child who needed a computer for school work. Scoutmaster Russ Mawson says the Troop plans to continue rebuilding computers as part of an on-going learning activity and community service project.
The Delray Beach City Commission will present awards to the Boy Scouts, and will designate the three women traveling to Tanzania, Alice Lee, Beverly Hosokawa and Katrina Kacandes, as Friendship Ambassadors to Moshi, Tanzania, East Africa during the City Commission meeting on Tuesday, February 19, 2002 at 6:00 P.M.
